Our History

Bear Ball began in the wake of COVID, during a time when Halifax had zero gay bars and almost no LGBTQ+ spaces left to gather, dance, or simply feel seen. In that lonely and quiet stretch, something bold was dreamt up: a space designed by bears, for bears — and for cubs, daddies, pups, otters, furries, chasers, and admirers too.

What started as a simple idea became a full-blown celebration: a fun, festive dance party that puts the spotlight on chunky, hunky joy while staying radically inclusive of everyone under the LGBTQ+ rainbow. Bear Ball isn’t just a party — it’s a love letter to our community, body positivity, and shaking your booty to great music with fabulous people.

Over the past 4 years, Bear Ball has grown from a 1-night dream into a true movement — with 12 wildly successful events that packed dance floors, filled hearts, and brought Halifax’s bear community roaring back to life.

As 2SLGBTQ+ nightlife began to bloom in Halifax with the opening of Rumours Cabaret and Stardust Bar, we kept the energy flowing with regular bar events that turned ordinary nights into unforgettable bear bashes.

Now, riding the wave of that momentum, we’re proud to launch Bear Ball XL, our first-ever full weekend bear run — the newest of its kind in Canada. It’s more than a party; it’s a celebration of fur, friendship, and 4 years of community-building, Halifax-style.
